Mural Contest

Detroit Mural – 2024

“Relief”

Detroit muralist Waleed Johnson created “Relief” to address air conditions in parts of his city and highlight the ways people can come together for progress. The artwork includes the Air Quality Index as a background and uses binary code of 0’s and 1’s in the background that reads “Clean air for Detroit.” His work draws subtle attention to how the city’s policy makers and local activists can share current monitoring data to reduce and improve air pollution levels in areas of Detroit that have been historically challenged. Johnson’s work points to the technology, resources and hope for the future.

“We believe murals serve as a reminder of Detroit’s enduring spirit and continued artistic vibrancy, along with the capability to communicate compelling messages,” said Detroit Transportation Corporation General Manager Robert Cramer.  “People gather, transfer and pass-through Detroit People Mover stations as part of their commute and daily lives. Introducing the first exterior murals into our presentation of accessible public art in and around the stations sets the stage for community interest and awareness, and each engagement which follows ensures a brighter and more connected future for the city.
