The Nashville mural Alert! Alert! Tennessee by Christian Green, located at 67 Fairfield Ave, Nashville, TN 37210, is a celebration of Tennessee’s resilience in the face of natural challenges. It showcases how satellite technology plays an important role in protecting the people of the state from severe weather events and environmental challenges.
The mural was brought to life through a combination of NASA Lifelines Funding and partnerships with Napier Elementary School, The Napier Community Center and community leaders. The project aims to inspire young minds and community members to engage with science, technology, and art, fostering a deeper understanding of the challenges that the state of Tennessee faces and the tools that are available to address them.
On the left side of the mural, satellites hover over the Earth collecting important information about its surface and atmosphere. As of 2024, more than 1,000 Earth observation satellites are actively gathering critical data from space, helping us monitor and learn about our planet. A dotted line, marked with the coordinates of Nashville, connects to one of these satellites, symbolizing how even here in Nashville Tennessee, satellite data plays an important role in providing information that communities rely upon day-to-day and in response to extreme weather.
On the right side of the mural, four key environmental challenges that Tennessee faces are depicted: Flooding, Extreme Temperatures, Tornado Outbreaks, and Air Quality and Pollution. These challenges threaten the health and livelihood of Tennessee’s people, but satellite data is helping us better understand these phenomena and build resilience against them.
Between these two sections, a tablet and a mobile device display a map of Nashville overlaid with data and an early warning alert. These devices represent the critical link that applications provide to lifesaving information. In many ways, the technology at our fingertips — phones, tablets, and computers — makes it possible to access this wealth of data, helping us plan, prepare, and stay informed in our daily lives.
